Steel rebar is an essential component for concrete foundations or structures (especially in earthquake zones). Whereas concrete has great compressive strength, the rebar has great tensile strength. Together they are structurally sound even if the concrete cracks. The layout of the rebar is defined by the structural engineer, specifically for the building loads and external forces.
